Whirlwind Wedding Weekend

I’m still a tad groggy from a very long — and very wonderful — weekend spent celebrating my little brother’s wedding! The reception was held at my parents’ house, so I’ve been pretty absorbed in various projects and other preparations for the past few weeks.

The ceremony was especially touching. My brother’s new bride has two daughters from a previous marriage (ages 9 and 11) — and I just loved the way that they were included in the ceremony. After the bride and groom’s vows, the girls said their own vows about agreeing to become part of this new family. They even got their own rings.

Afterward, the family and wedding party all came back to the sanctuary for pictures and the signing of the marriage license. The pastor made some quips about how the marraige isn’t official until the papers are signed and that he might not be above taking bribes, har, har. So then they proceeded to sign along with the best man and maid of honor. Just as we were about to move from that into the formal group pictures, the youngest daughter Audra approached the pastor very seriously and asked if she and her sister could sign the license also. Both girls took the whole thing very seriously and they’re both so excited about being a family; so when she heard the pastor explaining how the license makes it all legal, she wanted to be a part of it, too. Seeing her grip the pen with her gloved hand and add her signature to the document was the sweetest thing.

There were crafty elements to the day, of course. Not least of which was making a sundress for myself to wear. I’m relieved to say that it turned out quite well (Simplicity #5549). The pattern offers several variations (I made option C, like the example shown in white on the package — my version was turquoise blue), so I’m hoping to make at least one more in time for our vacation in May.

Mom and I also sewed a gaggle of red table runners for the reception, and my sis and I concocted pretty gauzy pew decorations out of white tulle and silk red rose petals. Oh! And I almost forgot the knitting content — a knitted afghan for their gift. I’ll check my camera and try to get some photos added to this post soon.

It sounds like your brother had a very special wedding. How sweet about Audra signing the license–made me teary eyed.

I was going through craftmuffin withdrawal even though I knew you were too busy to post (it’s all about me, yk).

It’s really nice when kids get to be included in weddings! Sounds like it was a good (and craft-filled) time for all.

I like that sundress pattern! It’s tempting, but I must remember I have six or seven patterns I bought last year and never used… and also that it’s not even above 35 degrees outside!
