The Clapotis that just wouldn’t quit

Don’t get me wrong. I still love the Clapotis project… a lot. This may end up being one of my favorite things I’ve made so far. BUT this running out of yarn thing has got to stop!

I picked up 5 balls (about 500 yards) of Reynolds Odyssey at my local yarn store’s big winter clearance sale last month. My guage is the same as the pattern, so I knew that I’d probably end up needing at least one extra ball. When I started running low, I ordered 2 extra balls from Patternworks — just to be on the safe side. Now I’ve got two complaints:

1. I’ve already knit the two extra balls of Reynolds Odyssey, and I ran out of yarn again (grr).

almost there

This time I really do think that one more ball will be plenty, but I’m having a hard time realizing that I’ll have to put this project on hold for another week or so. I was hoping to have it ready to take along on the plane as a blanket/wrap — which is realistically going to be my last opportunity to enjoy wearing it until fall.

2. The yarn that I got from Patternworks is from a drastically different dye lot.

color change

I mean, it doesn’t really even look like it should even have the same name as my original yarn. The yarn I started with has a lot more blue and pink in it, and the colors blend in such a way that all of the different tones are clearly visible. The new yarn has an abundance of orangey browns in it that seem to overpower and muddy everything else.

I knew that getting the same dye lot on short notice was a slim chance, but I honestly wasn’t worried about it. Self-striping yarns are generally pretty forgiving, I thought. Even so, I knew that I could return the new yarns and try to find some others that were at least closer to a match — but again, the appeal of being able to finish (I thought) and wear Clapotis this week was just too strong.

So, I am pouting big time. My options are (A) order one more ball from Patternworks to match the other two and finish it, maintaining this two-tone look I’ve got going, or (B) try to find 3 balls that more closely match my original yarn, and then attempt to rip back and fix the color situation.

What do you think? I’d got with option B, but I’m concerned about my ability to rip partway back on this without totally losing control of the dropped stitches. Or maybe that wouldn’t be so bad? Should I try it? Am I willing to risk having to rip out the entire thing — gasp! — and start all over again? I honestly don’t know at this point.

Your case of the clap is GORGEOUS. (Now, how many women hear that in one day?)

I would definitely go with option A because I am not a big fan of losing control, a’ la option B. But I am sort of a beginner, and unknitting is a skill I have yet to fully master. I would have to rip down to the bone.

So, what are you going to do? Hmmm? Enquiring minds want to know!

I would go with option A. I don’t know how you rip out something with dropped stitches, but trying to find where all the stitch markers go just might make you crazy.

I had the same problem with my Clapotis - I bought 700 yards of yarn and still ran out. It was very frustrating.

Good luck, I think it’s turning out beautiful!

You can’t really tell where the yarn changes lots.
Well, *you* can because you’re a perfectionist about your work.
    But themasses won’t spot it.
The subtle color shift gives it character and you will look stunning as you stroll by with it…
