Sara’s Quilt

The wife of one of my co-workers just had a baby girl who is having some serious liver problems. In lieu of a baby shower, the folks in my department got together to make a quilt. I brought in pink and white fabric squares and some fabric paint pens so that everyone could design their own square.

We came up with eight squares and some donated jungle print fabric for the backing. I added some borders and created a center medaillion to help tie it all together, and today we got to send the finished quilt home to Sara.

It was an interesting project in part because I’m a newbie quilter. I like working on this small baby-size scale. There are plenty of beginner goofs — especially on the back side where I found it hard to avoid puckers in the fabric. But overall, I’m proud of how it came out.

It was also an interesting challenge to attempt to find some unity among all of our different squares. At the same time, now I’m itching to make another quilt that I can have more control over from start to finish. Maybe this will inspire me to make something else out of the scraps I’ve been collecting!
