New Trend: One Sleeve Sweaters
I scored some Volgasippi Blue Peace Fleece last year and began knitting up an Everyday Cardigan. By the time I had three pieces or so finished, spring was in full swing and knitting a heavy wool sweater didn’t make much sense anymore. So, the half-finished cardigan was banished to the bottom of the yarn hamper to wait for chillier days.
A few weeks ago I decided to get going on the project so that I’d have it to wear for two full seasons. After finishing the large back panel, I congratulated myself on wisely having started with the sleeves last year which meant I only had one front panel left to go. No “sleeve island” for me!
I finished up the last piece last week and set out to wash and block everything tonight. The washing took several sink-fulls of water — that yarn was dirty! — but soon enough I was ready to start pinning. I pinned the back; I pinned the left front; I pinned the right front; I pinned a sleeve; I pinned the right front.
Wait a minute. Something seems amiss.
Yes, I’m all set to sew up a one-armed sweater. It’s not quite as heart-breaking as having two beautiful, fair-isle right-hand mittens, but frustrating nonetheless. Fortunately, in the process of all this washing and pinning I was reminded of how cozy and soft the end result is going to be (did I mention how dirty this yarn was?) — so I’m determined to cast on for that last sleeve post haste. Unless I can start a new trend in single sleeve winter wear. Maybe Vogue Knitting would go for it?
