I’m Going Shopping!

I know that the stars must be in some special alignment or something when the forces of “yarn sale” coincide with “birthday.” Whee!

My LYS is having their annual winter yarn clearance, meaning that most everything with wool in it will be 30-50% off this weekend. Happily, this is a birthday weekend for me, so regardless of whether that means birthday gift certificates or not… some shopping is definitely in order! Plus, I’ve been sticking (more or less) to my stash-busting plan, so I don’t even feel guilty about it!

So, the big question is, of course, what to buy?! As soon as I decided to curb my yarn-buying habit, it seemed like a thousand projects and gorgeous fibers jumped to mind, tempting me to break my resolve. Now with the prospect of a big sale looming… I’m kinda stumped. Go figure!

Okay, okay, there are a few ideas rattling around in my brain like yarn suitable for a Clapotis. (Sidenote here to say that I bought some Knit Picks sock yarn for this purpose… but I’m having second thoughts about knitting Clapotis in fingering weight. Maybe the sock yarn really just wants to be socks??) Also, I want to make some Nordic-looking mittens, perhaps the pattern from the Winter 04 IK mag? And I’m thinking about making one of the messenger style felted bags from Stitch N Bitch Nation.

There. So maybe I have more of a plan than I realized. I think I’ll flip through my baby pattern books a bit, too — surely there’s something adorable there that’s begging to be knit up in a soft merino or alpaca. I always pet the Debbie Bliss yarns in the store, but I have yet to ever work with any. Maybe now is the time? Or should I find out what all the fuss is about Rowan Calmer? What a fun dilemma!

There’s a cute t-shirt pattern in the latest MagKnits (www.magknits.com) that uses Calmer. I’ve never tried it either but I do think the Debbie Bliss stuff is nice. Pricey for the yardage but nice.

    How exciting! Happy birthday!

I’ve been eyeing the felted laptop bag, myself. Happy birthday!
