Lost at sea?

No, we didn’t go on an extended 14-day cruise. We’re back, the cruise was fantastic, but I’ve just been lazy about posting. I’m letting that thing happen where I delay posting about two or three things, and then suddenly I’m struck with the feeling that I’ll never get caught up again.

So, to begin getting caught up, I should start with our fabulous vacation! Lots of sun, fun experiences, good friends, and waay too much good food. This was my third cruise — and in terms of getting the most out of what the ship has to offer, I think cruising with a group has been my favorite.

Our ship was the gigantic new Carnvial Valor which just launched at the beginning of this year. Everything was new and shiny, and there were some neat new perks like ship-wide wi-fi Internet access (oops, shouldn’t have told you that… blows my excuses for not posting) and a sushi bar.

Our ports were in the Eastern Carribbean: Bahamas, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten/Martin. Some highlights were snorkeling in St. Thomas where we got to see a ship wreck in addition to loads of fish, and visiting the Butterfly Farm in St. Martin where they showed us how to lure the butterflies into landing on our fingers (they like to taste the rum punch!).

On board, we spent a lot of time in deck chairs, of course. And something new for us — we dabbled in the casino a bit. There were gaming lessons offered early in the week, and the dealer doing the teaching was great. I finally feel like I understand the overal gist of Craps which I thought was a lot of fun. Apparently, I didn’t learn quite well enough to win, but I made my $20 last for a long time and I made some money for other people who were betting more aggressively. Kate played in a Blackjack Tournment and proved to be a worthy contender. I don’t think he ended up winning anything either, but his name was up on the leader board for a while.

In terms of cruise knitting, I brought along the Lace-Trim Bolero which didn’t see any progress at all (so much for wearing it on this trip!). And I also brought a koigu sock that I did work on a little bit on the ship, but mostly on the plane. I’m new to sock knitting, so it’s still slow going for me — but so far, so good.

So, there are a lot of drunkard butterflies? who would have thought the fluttering was like the butterfly equivalent to intoxicated staggering!
