Aunt Martha

With three new nieces/nephews on the way, I’ve been on the lookout for cute baby projects. There will be knitting, of course, but I think there will also be embroidering. I scored a few white onesies on sale at Target the other day, and treated myself to some new patterns from the always divine Sublime Stitching.

Not all of these are destined for baby things, necessarily. I see aprons, bags, and perhaps button-up shirts for Kate down the road.

You know how it is when you start thinking about something that you hadn’t been focused on before, and suddenly you’re seeing elements of it everywhere you look? Yeah, so I’ve been thinking about embroidery and getting excited about being able to put some of my mondo floss stash to good use again . . . and what do you know, I spy some cute vintagey iron-on embroidery patterns at W*lM*rt of all places.

I present to you the embroidery stylings of Aunt Martha:

They had quite a selection, and for $.87 each, I showed super-human restraint in only buying two. According to Aunt Martha’s site, she’s been putting out these patterns since 1930. The “Birds of a Feather” set is my favorite. Wouldn’t they just be darling on some tea towels?

Now that I’ve had a chance to open up the packagees, my only concern is that the images are quite a bit larger than I expected. (Sharpie included for reference)

So, I’m thinking copier and then tracing with my iron-on pencil? It’s worth a try because I can’t wait to see one of those cute chickies on a tiny onesie.

Wow today’s captcha word was CATS!

Can’t wait to see some embroidery FOs. I find that thing a nice alternative to knitting and sewing.

Ohhhh. I have one of Aunt Martha’s iron-ons, too! I bought it to make pillow cases for James and Michele’s wedding and, well, they’ve been married for 2 years and the iron-ons (and the pillowcases I bought to embroider) are still untouched.

Hopefully yours will fair better! lol!

I also found Aunt Martha’s patterns (at W-M) and made a baby quilt with them. I traced the patterns on white cotten fabric, colored them with crayons, and then sewed them together. There are a few other steps to insure the process is a success so if you’re interested, let me know.
