Guilty Pleasure
We have the Showtime channel free this month, and I’ve been sucked into the campy original series, Jeremiah.

That’s right — starring none other than Luke Perry, Malcolm Jamal-Warner, AND (in some episodes) Sean Astin. How can I turn away from that kind of star power?
The show is set in the not-so-distant future, about 20 years or so after a mysterious illness (a.ka. The Big Death) wiped out all of the adults on the planet leaving the kids of the world to raise themselves and build a new society. Luke and Malcolm are sort-of field agents who are part of a small group trying to restore order based from their secret hideout called Thunder Mountain. (Which always makes me think of Escape to Witch Mountain, for some reason.)
A typical episode: Malcolm helps a shy illiterate kid and his friends defend the local library from thugs who want to burn all the books. In between inspiring pep-talks about the importance of history and literature and hand-to-hand combat scenes, he also manages to teach the kid to read. Meanwhile, Luke’s chraracter meets up with an old friend and his strong-willed, wheelchair-bound girlfriend and helps her fulfil a lifelong promise to scatter her father’s ashes in the Colorado river.
I’ll be so sad when our free Showtime is over.

Thunder Mountain? That reminds me of Disneyland!
P.S. I’m happy to hear that those three guys, particularly Sean Astin and Malcolm Jamal Warner, are finding work. Woot!

this sentence almost made me spit gatorade out my nose: How can I turn away from that kind of star power?

It’s weird that I can learn things about you by reading your blog. I have never seen you watch Jeremiah. You must watch it after I start snoozing.
